Sputnik ("the app," "we," "our") is designed with your privacy as a core principle. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app accesses, how it is used, and your choices.
Sputnik does not have a server or backend. All photo analysis and location prediction happens entirely on your device. We do not collect, transmit, or have access to your photos or any data generated by the app.
Sputnik uses Apple's built-in Photos picker to let you select existing photos, so Sputnik does not request or receive access to your Photos library — it only receives the specific photos you choose to share through the picker. Sputnik also requests access to your Camera so you can take a new photo directly within the app. Up to four photos, whether picked or captured, can be submitted together as a query. These photos are used to:
Sputnik predicts locations by comparing an on-device embedding of your photo against a bundled index of city embeddings. This comparison happens entirely on your device. Your photos are never uploaded anywhere, and no photo or embedding data ever leaves your device as part of this process.
All data generated by the app — including Pins (saved locations, photos, and coordinates) and app settings — is stored locally on your device. This data is not transmitted off your device by Sputnik.
Sputnik does not use any analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting services. We do not track your activity in the app, and no usage data is collected or transmitted to us or any third party.
Sputnik offers an optional one-time purchase, Sputnik Premium, to unlock additional geolocation results beyond the free tier's maximum of five results. This purchase is processed entirely by Apple through StoreKit. Sputnik does not receive or store your payment information; this is handled directly by Apple in accordance with Apple's own privacy practices.
Sputnik does not integrate with any third-party services, SDKs, or APIs beyond Apple's own system frameworks (PhotosUI, SwiftData, MapKit, CoreML, StoreKit).
Sputnik does not knowingly collect data from anyone, including children, as the app does not collect or transmit personal data at all.
Because Sputnik uses the system Photos picker, you choose exactly which existing photos to share with the app each time, and no ongoing library permission is ever granted. You can revoke Sputnik's access to your Camera at any time in your device's Settings app under Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera. If Camera access is revoked, you can still submit photos using the Photos picker.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected by an updated "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
